The story

Three cuts from one night

Substation Nine, 21:43. Odile Marsh is the first to know it is not a fault.

21:41 · Sector 4 · All substations down

At 9:41 the city goes dark.

Halcyon Reach loses every substation in the same second: eleven million people, sixty-two square miles, no light but the fires.

The crews say twelve hours. By midnight the radios have stopped answering.

Corran Exchange, 22:08. The first strand.

22:08 · Corran Exchange roof

The dead grid answers her hands.

Tamsin Rhee runs parcels across the rooftops for cash. On the roof of the Corran Exchange, the cold cables hum when she touches them.

She pulls, and the light comes out of the wire like thread.

Strand 41, 23:56. The Shear makes his first cut.

23:56 · Strand 41 severed

Every strand holds a block.

Each line she ties between two towers keeps the streets below it lit, the wards breathing and the night trains moving.

Someone out in the dark is cutting them, one by one, and he always knows where she will be next.
