The old plunge hall in the morning: a slant of window light across the tiled wall, and below it water so still it holds the whole room.

An hour of nothing.

A members’ bathhouse in the old pumping station at Saltmere Point.

The ritualHeat, cold, salt, rest. Then again, if you like.

There is an order to the rooms. Nobody will hurry you through it.

Steam rising off a timber tub in the hot room, caught in a shaft of window light, the air thick and warm.

Stage 1 of 4

Heat

85°°C

12 minutes

Let the heat come to you. Leave a minute before it starts to ask anything of you.

Clear, cold water moving slowly, sea-glass green with light running through it.

Stage 2 of 4

Cold

9°°C

1 minute

Step down slowly. Breathe out as the water reaches your shoulders.

The salt pans below the station: shallow stone basins crusted white with sea salt, the swell breaking just beyond.

Stage 3 of 4

Salt

21°°C

15 minutes

Dry, still air and salt raked from the pans below the point. Your skin settles; so does the rest of you.

A wooden chair with a sheepskin by the tall window of the quiet hall, rain running down the glass as the evening lamps come on outside.

Stage 4 of 4

Rest

The buildingIt was built to move water. It still does.

An old pumping engine of dark cast iron standing in a whitewashed hall under tall timber windows.
A weathered iron valve and wheel from the original pumping works, riveted and rusted.

Then 1887

The engine house

The Saltmere Point pumping station lifted fresh water to the town for seventy-four years. Two steam engines worked in the hall beneath the tall windows until the mains came in 1961 and the doors were closed.

Three tall arched windows of the bath hall, their iron glazing bars against a pale sky over the water.

Now 2026

The bath hall

We kept the brick, the iron and the windows, and put the water back. The thermal bath sits in the old engine pit; the cold plunge is fed from the original well.

  4. Leave the ladle where you found it.
  5. Under-sixteens come with an adult, and on weekend mornings only.

  • Nothing else. Towels, robes and soap are here.
Rain on the window glass, the trees beyond blurred grey-green.
The sea under a heavy grey sky, a squall darkening the horizon.
