The building

Built in 1898. Taken back to the stone, one floor at a time.

1898Six townhouses on the north side of the square

Varrow House was built as six townhouses for the square’s north side and joined behind one front in 1931. By the time we bought it, it had been offices for forty years: suspended ceilings, carpet tiles, the sashes painted shut.

We took every floor back to its walls. The limestone was cleaned with a fine water mist, never grit, and the cornice repaired in matching stone. Every sash box was rebuilt with new cords and slim double glazing. The stone stair, the shutters and the panelling stayed. Everything you cannot see is new: wiring, heating, acoustic floors.

Materials & light

The same house, through one day.

The rooms were planned around where the sun is at each hour. These four photographs follow it from the east bedrooms to the drawing room wall.

    The first sun comes in low over the mews and lands on the parquet in two squares. Sheers soften it; the shutters fold back flat into their boxes.

    At midday the kitchens on the east side have bright, shadowless light to cook by. Each splashback is one slab, book-matched, and the worktops are honed rather than polished, so they never glare.

    In the afternoon the sun swings round to the square and throws the window bars across the plaster. The walls are a limewash, so the light reads warm, not white.

    At dusk the last daylight sits high on the wall. Every room has wired lamp sockets, so the evening light comes from where you sit, not from the ceiling.

The square

Two acres of plane trees, behind the original railings.

The garden was laid out in 1840 and still belongs to the houses around it. Every home at Varrow House comes with a key: a lawn, a gravel walk, benches under the planes and a tennis court that is never quite free on a Saturday.
