Your visit

From the first appointment to the day we let you go.

Nothing on this page should surprise you on the day. If it does, tell us and we will change the page.

  1. 01Before

We call you within a working day

Someone from the clinic phones to find a time that suits you and asks two questions: which hand you write with, and what you do with your hands all day.

    • Bring any scans you have had elsewhere
    • Wear a top with loose sleeves
    • Write down what you cannot do any more
  2. 02Day 1

    Forty minutes with a consultant

The consultant examines both hands, measures your grip and pinch and asks what the pain stops you doing. If a scan would change the plan, it is done in the same building the same afternoon.

    • Grip and pinch measured
    • X-ray or ultrasound if needed
    • Results explained before you leave
  3. 03Day 1

You leave with a plan in writing

What we think it is, the options in order, and what we would choose in your place. A copy goes to your GP the same evening.

    • Written plan in plain words
    • A copy to your GP
    • A named person to call
  4. 04Week 2

    Splint, injection or day surgery

Splints are made at the chair by the hand therapist. Injections are given in clinic. Operations happen in our own day-surgery theatre, usually under local anaesthetic, and you go home the same day.

    • Splints made while you wait
    • Most operations under local anaesthetic
    • Home the same day
  5. 05Weeks 3 to 12

Hand therapy with the same therapist

Short sessions, a few exercises that fit your day, and a grip measurement each time so you can see it come back.

    • The same therapist each time
    • Exercises that take minutes, not hours
    • Grip measured at every visit
  6. 06Discharge

We let you go when your hand does what you need

Not when a number is reached, but when you can do the thing you came in unable to do. You and your GP get a final letter, and you can come back without a new referral for a year.

    • A final letter to you and your GP
    • Back without a new referral for a year
