The estuary at Quellbridge before school: mist lying on the water and the far bank, its trees standing out of the fog.

A day at Corrowden

One school day, 07:30 to 21:00.

Scroll and the day moves on: breakfast, lessons, the library, the river, music and prep, the way a pupil lives it.

Scroll, drag the hand, or use the arrow keys.Swipe through the day.

  1. 07:30

Long tables and benches in Hall, laid for breakfast, sun falling across the floor.

    Breakfast in Hall

    House tables, 07:30 to 08:15

Day pupils come in along the river path; boarders are already on their second round of toast.

  2. 09:10

A chemistry bench: racks of test tubes, glass flasks and an open textbook.

    Chemistry, period 2

    Lower School, 09:10 to 10:10

Titrations in the old laboratory. The burettes are older than the wiring and still read true.

  3. 11:30

Tall shelves of old bound books in the library, a lamp glowing above them.

    The library under the dome

    Study period, 11:30 to 12:30

Quiet study under the copper. Sixth Formers book a carrel; everyone else finds a window.

  4. 15:40

A crew in silhouette rowing across the misty estuary.

    The river

    Games, 14:00 to 16:30

The first crews push off on the ebb while a coach cycles the towpath and calls the stroke.

  5. 17:30

A score open on a music stand, a conductor's baton at the edge of the page.

    The music school

    Activities, 17:00 to 18:15

Practice rooms open after games. A chamber group runs the slow movement for Friday's concert.

  6. 19:30

A desk lamp lighting books and a plant in a darkened study at evening prep.

    Evening prep

In the houses, 19:30 to 21:00

Prep under the lamps. A tutor walks the corridor and answers what the textbook would not.

The verdigris dome

A copper roof that took twenty years to turn green.

Our colour was not picked from a chart. It is the weather on the old library, and it tells the school's story in four sentences.

  1. 1874

The school opens in the old customs house on the Strand with thirty-one pupils and one borrowed boat.

  2. 1903

The library is built and roofed in copper, as bright as a new penny for about a decade.

  3. 1968

Girls join the Sixth Form; by 1975 Corrowden is co-educational from the first year.

  4. 2024

In the school's 150th year the dome is relined, and the library opens to every year group.

How we teach

Three stages, one ring binder.

Each stage has its own head, its own building and its own pace. Open a tab.

Lower SchoolAges 11 to 13Years 7 and 8

Curiosity first, then habits.

Small forms, one tutor who knows every child well, and a timetable that keeps the whole curriculum open: three sciences, two languages, Latin, art, music and drama each week. Prep is short and done at school.

Life beyond the classroom

Afternoons belong to the river, the pitch and the practice rooms.

Boarding, sport, the river and music
A wooden rowing boat back in the boathouse, its plain oars shipped across the thwarts.
Boat in, oars shipped, by 16:45, or the boatman notices.
A nocturne open on the piano, the page lit from the window.
Friday concert: the Lower School strings, nervous and very good.
A goal on an empty playing field in thick morning fog.
First XI, fog delay. Kick-off when we can see the far goal.
The old science laboratory: benches of glassware under hanging lamps.
Science society, Thursdays. Yes, the old lab.
