Concept company: no real medicines.

A twelve-channel pipette lifts deep blue reagent from a reservoir beside a clear 96-well plate.

Five molecules. One question: does it help?

Orvanthe discovers, tests and makes its own medicines: 600 people, two programmes in the clinic and a sterile plant, explaining the science without the hype.

The plate

How a molecule is tested, in one picture.

Every programme begins on a plastic plate with 96 small wells. This is the first experiment any molecule has to pass.

  1. 01Dilute Each column holds the same molecule at three times the strength of the one before, from weakest on the left to strongest on the right.
  2. 02Measure Cells in each well light up as they respond. Deeper blue means a stronger response. Eight rows repeat the test, so one bad well cannot fool us.
  3. 03Read the curve Plot response against strength and an S-shaped curve appears. Its midpoint, the EC50, is the dose that gives half the full effect.

Illustrative data from a concept assay. A good curve is the start of a programme, not evidence that a medicine works.

Pipeline

Where each programme has got.

Five programmes, ordered by how far they have travelled. A bar is filled only for work that is done.

Notebook, p. 112How we work

Write it down, then do it twice.

Three entries from a working week. Every step in the building is recorded before it is trusted.

  1. A second pair of gloves pulled on over the cuff before entering the filling room.

Second gloves over the cuffs. Nothing enters the filling room that has not been wiped twice and logged once.

  2. A rack of small clear glass vials from a formulation screen, seen close.

Six candidate mixtures, seven days on the bench. Clear at day 7 counts. Cloudy at day 7 is written up, not thrown away.

  3. Polished steel valves and pipework on top of a bioreactor.

Steam in place, 121 °C for 30 minutes, then a swab from the same eleven points as last time. Same points, every time.

Asking about a study for a patient?

Our clinical team answers questions from doctors and study nurses about who may take part in Study OV-114-03 and Study OV-207-02.

  • Who may take part
